Q: What is the time commitment?

Each YLA class will be in session for one year.

    Phase One

Prospective YLA 2009 students will participate in camp session #2, July 6-12, 2008, at the Barbara C. Harris Camp in Greenfield, NH where we will start the leadership journey with team building activities and other adventures! This first week will allow us all to discern the candidates’ interest in completing the program.

To sign up for Phase I, register at  http://www.bchcenter.org

Following camp, students interested in participating will be offered applications. Those who complete the application process and are accepted will be invited to participate in Phase II.

   Phase Two

Each YLA class will be in session for one year. In order to be eligible for the mission experience to El Salvador, each student must complete Phase I and Phase II.

Phase II begins with a kick off Saturday meeting where students, their parents, a mentor selected from their community, their priest and their youth minister will spend the day exploring the YLA commitment and learn about/begin the process of Project Planning. Each student is expected to create, plan and complete a PROJECT to benefit his/her home parish during the year.

During the school year there will be two meetings, three overnights, one full weekend retreat.

Each overnight includes Bible study, games & activities, worship and spiritual reflection. Leadership topics include: Listening & Communication Skills, Priority Setting & Decision Making, Budgeting & Fundraising and more! Each overnight begins at 6:30PM on Friday and ends at 2PM on Saturday.

  • YLA Retreat #1: Oct. 3-4. 2008

  • Kick-Off event with parents, a mentor from your community, parish priest, and youth minister: October 4, 2008 10am - 1pm

  • YLA Retreat #2: December 5-6, 2008

  • DioMass Sr. High Retreat: February 6-8, 2009

  • Dinner/meeting for parents/students to learn about the El Salvador mission experience: March 6, 2009

  • YLA Retreat #3: April 17-18, 2009

In addition, every member of the YLA is expected to read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest the Daily Office Lectionary gospel reading for the day, and then go out and obey Jesus each day. Please read the appointed gospel reading, spend some time with Jesus talking about it, and then spend time in stillness & silence listening to Jesus' presence in your heart and soul. Talk about this with your fellow DYC members and mentors and use this as an opportunity for the Good News of the Gospel of Christ to become a part of your every word and action.

    Phase Three

Students who complete all of the requirements for Phase II by attending each checked event above, will participate in a mission experience to El Maizal, El Salvador in August 2009.  Dates will be set in late 2008.
